Local Youngsters Offer Reasons To Be Cheerful
Despite the current economic crisis members and guests at a recent concert organized by Heywood Conservatives found reasons to be cheerful. More than one hundred people turned out to hear a special programme, arranged by their musical director Kathy Brooks, performed by The Rochdale Youth Wind Band.
A selection from the musical Grease saw many would-be John Travoltas and Olivia Newton Johns performing their own version of the hand jive, and selections of hits by Abba and Elvis Presley also proved very popular. Perhaps the surprise hit of the evening was a selection of theme music from The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies.
This set the scene for a second half, at Hopwood Unionist Club, that saw much walking of the plank and shivering of timbers to a wonderfully rousing compilation of traditional English sea shanties and hornpipes. The performance concluded to flag-waving and choral singing accompanying the orchestra in their Last Night Of The Proms material which included, of course, Jerusalem and Land Of Hope And Glory.
The evening included a pie and pea supper and a well supported raffle, and a special presentation to life long party supporter.
In thanking the audience for their support, Norman Warwick, Chairman of Heywood Conservatives, congratulated the orchestra and their director for such an appropriate selection of music. He also remarked that whilst it is fashionable to criticize today’s teenagers, this orchestra illustrated what teenagers are capable of and how, if properly engaged and encouraged, young adults can make positive contributions to a nation that could then rightly claim, again, to be a land of hope and glory.
